Craig Norris — Chief Executive Officer and President
Craig Norris is a high-technology industry veteran with over 20 years of front line experience leading profitable organizations in the areas of strategy, operations and sales. He has served as Chairman, President, CEO or COO of both private and public organizations, including Attensity, Ion Systems, Work Exchange Technologies and Connectinc. Craig has successfully navigated start-ups and early stage companies to IPO’s and other significant funding events, and has been continuously engaged with the completion of major sales to Fortune 500 organizations and the Federal Government. Craig also brings to Chiliad a strong management consulting and systems integration background, having been a regional vice president for leading international consulting firm CAP Gemini America.
Craig graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in economics from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN and holds an MBA from Fairleigh Dickenson University, Rutherford, NJ.
Mike Schwien — Chief Financial Officer
Mike Schwien has over 20 years of financial, operations and consulting experience. He has served as CFO for multiple early stage to middle market companies both public and private in the software and technology industry. He has participated in several significant funding events including the sale of Overwatch Systems to Textron, Inc. in 2006. Prior to Chiliad he was CFO for Bamboo Solution a leading provider of enterprise software applications for Microsoft SharePoint.
Mike is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder with a BS in Administration and is a CPA.
Paul McOwen — Chief Operating Officer and President of Chiliad Federal
Paul McOwen leads Chiliad’s strategic business development efforts in the government sector. Paul has held leadership positions for 25 years in the vanguard of information technology research, innovation, and commercialization, producing software that has been used strategically in Fortune 500 companies and federal government agencies. He has initiated and managed deployments of advanced and highly differentiated software for large scale national security systems for the Intelligence Community. His academic positions have included Deputy Chairman of the Computer Science Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for 10 years, and Administrative Director of a National Science Foundation research center – the National Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval. Paul founded three software companies, serving in various positions including Board Member, Chairman, President, and CEO.
At the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Paul earned a BS in education and an MS in Engineering and completed all PhD requirements but the dissertation in the area of cooperative and decentralized computing.
Robert Cook — Chief Technical Officer
Bob Cook is responsible for technical management for the Chiliad technology portfolio and the Chiliad product development team. Bob has nearly 25 years experience in the development and implementation of intelligent information systems, including search, real-time filtering, classification, entity recognition, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, cross-lingual search, data fusion and federated search. He has overseen the development of the Chiliad technology portfolio and also served as chief architect for a number of high-profile programs, including multiple programs for the Intelligence Community. Prior to joining Chiliad in 1999, Bob spent 10 years at the University Of Massachusetts Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR). As part of the CIIR research staff, Bob managed the integration of new technologies into a number of commercial and government applications, including the Worldwide Customer Support system for Lotus Development Corp., the Infoseek Internet search engine, the Library of Congress, and various Department of Defense and National Security Agency projects.
Bob received the prestigious “Hammer” award presented by then-Vice President Al Gore for his development work on the U.S. Business Advisor. Bob received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Howard R. Turtle, Ph.D. — Chief Scientist
Howard Turtle has over thirty five years of experience conducting and managing research aimed at improving tools for managing and understanding unstructured data. His research interests include design and implementation of retrieval systems, formal models for retrieval of complex objects, text representation techniques, automatic classification, text and data mining, and automated inference techniques. Turtle is a member of the faculty of Syracuse University where he is the Director of the Center for Natural Language Processing and a Research Associate Professor in the School of Information Studies. He has worked as a technical consultant, primarily dealing with information retrieval system design and evaluation, text classification and mining, technology assessment, and intellectual property protection. His research formed the basis of the highly regarded InQuery information retrieval system and he was actively involved in the development of Indri, an open source search engine based on language models and inference network operators. Turtle served as Chief Scientist for West Publishing where he directed work that led to West’s natural language search engine and to the KeyCite citator system. Prior to his work at West, Turtle was Chief Scientist at Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), where he held corporate-wide responsibility for technology assessment, directed selected research projects, managed and conducted internal technical audits, and led design projects.
Before that, Turtle was a research scientist at Battelle Columbus Laboratories, where he designed and implemented software for the BASIS information retrieval system and participated in telecommunications consulting projects for corporate clients. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and an M.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in English and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.
Geoff Bakeman — Vice President Channel Sales and Business Development
Geoff Bakeman has been in the IBM channel business for nearly 30 years supporting commercial and federal practices. Over the past 15 years Geoff has been working in the Greater Washington D.C. area supporting the federal market sector, working closely with the top Systems Integrators and VARS to bring leading edge technology to the government. Geoff’s expertise aligns government procurement vehicles with best-of-breed technology solutions to assure government best practices are executed. Geoff’s senior executive and partner tenure in the federal market have been instrumental to many key engagements that could not have come to fruition independently.Geoff received his Bachelor of Science degrees from Ohio State University.
Ken Rosen — Vice-President, Marketing
Ken Rosen has 20 years’ experience in sales, marketing and strategy development including executive roles in both start-ups and industry-leading companies. Previously, Ken was co-founder of Performance Works, a management consulting firm delivering corporate strategy and marketing services and co-founder and Vice President of Marketing for Drobo, a thriving consumer and small/medium business storage hardware company. Before that, Ken was Vice President of Marketing at Allegis, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company serving large enterprises, Vice President of Brand and Product Marketing at Computer Curriculum Corporation, and manager at NeXT Software and Apple.
Ken earned a Masters of Business Administration from Stanford University and did his undergraduate work at Harvard University.
Vasant Kumar — Chief Architect
Vasant is chief architect of Chiliad. In this role, Vasant brings over 18 years experience in architecture and development of information retrieval and large scale distributed systems. In his role as chief architect, Vasant oversees the architecture and design of its scalable, distributed core search, filtering, and analysis technologies. His research interests also include integration of information retrieval and relational database systems, scalability/performance, and data mining. Vasant was a principal developer and researcher at Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) lab at University of Massachusetts’s computer science department during the development of InQuery search system. He also was the principal architect at Sovereign Hill Software, Dataware, and Knumi developing products in the area of knowledge management, data mining, and information retrieval.
Vasant received a M.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Louisiana State University, a M. Tech degree in Aircraft Production Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, and a Bachelor in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Mysore University, India.
Greg Brooks — Director of Development
Greg Brooks has worked at Chiliad as principal developer, solution architect and development manager for eight years. His focus has been on creating products that fundamentally change the way we solve problems. Before Chiliad, Greg held development leadership positions at McKesson, Thomson Financial, and Computer Associates.
Greg received a Bachelor of Music Composition degree from the University of North Texas, and still enjoys playing trumpet.
Joe Fomenky — Controller
Joe Fomenky has over 12 years of managerial expertise within accounting, finance, information technology management and systems analysis/deployment in start-ups, small, and big businesses. Prior to Chiliad, Joe was a Principal Director and Systems Analyst at Fomenky Consulting Group (FCG), an innovative IT management solution entity deploying VSAT related/network technology, modems, and resell of servers and computer related equipments. Preceding FCG, Joe was Accounting Systems Manager at IHR/Bridgestreet Worldwide, one of the biggest corporate housing providers worldwide. Before that, Joe was Business Manager at MedSol Services, a small provider of medical related services. Joe has performed consultative roles with foreign governmental bodies, mobile telephony companies, and organizations seeking investments in emerging technology markets.
Joe is currently pursuing a dual Master Degree MSIT/MBA from the University of Maryland. Joe earned a BSIT Degree with a Minor in Business Accounting from George Mason University. He holds an AAS Degree from NVCC in Information Systems Technology.
Jennifer Summers — Manager of Administration and Human Resources
Jennifer Summers became Manager of Administration and Human Resources for Chiliad, Inc. in June 2005. Previously, Jennifer served as a Associate for Dewey Ballantine LLP, in New York in the Insurance Division and as law clerk for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Jennifer earned a Juris Doctor from New York University and a Masters of Business Administration from Ball State University. Jennifer did her undergraduate work at Indiana University.
